DESCRIPTION
This Distillery bottling of The Arran Malt Sauternes cask finish is bottled at 50% and is a rich fruity whisky, full of charm, complexity and quality.
After a number of years maturation in traditional oak casks The Arran Single Malt is finished in Sauternes wine casks - a highly distinguished French fortified apéritif (dessert wine). Master Distiller James MacTaggart carefully monitored this period of secondary maturation to ensure the perfect balance between The Arran Malt and the Sauternes casks.
No artificial colouring has been added to this whisky ensuring a completely natural and traditional product, the absence of chill-filtration in this product results in a more full bodied and flavoursome malt.
The Isle of Arran Distillery was named Scottish Distiller of the year in 2007, and in 2005 won The Queen's Award for Enterprise - the highest business honour in the UK.
OFFICIAL TASTING NOTES
Nose: Honeysuckle, melon and marzipan with a spicy edge.
Palate: Richly honeyed with a lifting zestiness, sliding into spice and zingy salt before vanilla and sultana stand out. Followed by notes of toasted oak.
Finish: A glorious combination of voluptuous Sauternes and snake-hipped Arran Malt.
ABOUT THE DISTILLERY
Isle of Arran Distillery was the first legal distillery to open on the Isle of Arran for 150 years and is one of the few remaining independent distilleries in Scotland.
The Distillery opened in 1995 in a purpose made building, but uses only traditional methods of distilling with wooden washbacks and copper stills. There is no peat used in the production process, no caramel added for artificial colouring and Arran Single Malts are also non-chill filtered. The water for the whisky comes from Loch na Davie, in the hills overlooking the distillery.
During construction of the distillery, a pair of Golden Eagles built their nest on a nearby cliff, and as they are a protected species, construction of the distillery was temporarily halted. The visitor centre was opened in 1997 by HM the Queen, who was given a cask of whisky for Prince William and Prince Harry. The first Whisky was released in 1998.
