GLEN SCOTIA DOUBLE CASK
Campbletown Scotch Whisky
Glen Scotia is just one of three remaining distilleries in Campbeltown, the ‘Victorian capital of whisky’ where over 30 distilleries once operated. Campbeltown today comprises one of the five Scotch whisky regions.
OFFICIAL TASTING NOTES
Nose: Very sweet; crème caramel, caramelised fruit sugars, wood sugar, toffee and fudge before some apple and peach appear. A charred note of bourbon with a pleasing dusty dryness appears late.
Palate: Sweet and quite ‘fat’. The dry distillery character remains, now with depth to counter.
Finish: Deep and dark.ABOUT THE DISTILLERY
Glen Scotia Distillery was founded in 1832. It has changed hands many times over the years and was overhauled in the 1980s to increase efficiency and capacity, although it closed in 1984 and re opened in 1989 after being sold. This company went into receivership in 1994 and it was sold again with production restarting in 1999.
During its heyday, there were thirty distilleries in Campbeltown, today there are just a few. Most of the distilleries in the Campletown region exported to America, but after prohibition was introduced in America demand declined rapidly.
Today the Glen Scotia Distillery is said to be haunted by the ghost of a previous owner who drowned himself in Campletown Loch, near the distillery in 1930.
