Penderyn whisky - ‘Croeso i Gymru’
Scotland is renowned for its whisky. In fact, it produces more whisky than anywhere else in the world, and the spirits produced are of the highest class. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean it has the monopoly on the ‘water of life’.
Good distilleries can be found all over the UK. And here at Whisky Tasting Company, we have a particular penchant for Welsh whisky – specifically, that made by Penderyn.
Nestled in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons, Penderyn distillery is recognised worldwide for its range of fresh, fruity and flavoursome single malts. It’s been awarded over 50 gold medals since its establishment in 1998 – and, in our opinion, they’re all very well-deserved.
We’re incredibly proud to work with such an inspirational brand and currently offer a tasting set specifically dedicated to their whiskies. So, why not see what all the fuss is about? Find out more about the distillery, treat yourself to our Penderyn Whisky Gift Set and extend your whisky repertoire into the Land of Castles.
Welsh whisky – no longer a ‘lost art’
Penderyn whisky launched on St. David’s Day 2004 – at which point, it was the first whisky to be produced in the country for over a century. Distilling had become a bit of a ‘lost art’ in Wales. But in a small pub in a small valley, a group of friends decided it was time for that to change, and dreamt of making a spirit that was as pure and precious as Welsh gold.
It’s fair to say, they succeeded.
A single malt with a unique taste
Single malts created at Penderyn have a unique flavour, which is due to several factors:
The water source
The distillery’s location, on the southern tip of the Brecon Beacons, isn’t a coincidence. It was chosen specifically because it allowed access to a continuous supply of fresh, natural spring water. And this water certainly contributes to its pure ‘clean’ taste you'll love.
A unique distilling process
Unlike other distilleries – which use a conventional two or three-pot ‘lantern’ still – Penderyn uses a ‘Faraday’ still, with a single pot and a two-part rectifying column.
This unique technology gives the spirit complexity, depth and finesse, whilst also removing many of the undesirable chemical compounds (something that a conventional still can’t do). It allows the distillery to create a whisky that is extremely strong (92% ABV) and intensely flavoured.
Charred oak casks
House-style Penderyn whisky is produced using two types of cask. A bourbon barrel is used for the initial maturation, before the spirit is transferred to a Portuguese barrique, which previously held a rich Madeira wine.
These casks are hand-selected to boost complexity and flavour. And only when the whisky has reached perfection, do the team of skilled distillers (all women!) remove the spirit from the barrel and bottle it up for whisky-lovers to enjoy.
