Mackmyra Swedish Whisky.
We’re incredibly excited to be partnering with this award-winning and forward-thinking brand. Mackmyra was the first-ever distillery to be established in Sweden, offering a delectable range of fruity and smokey spirits. And to mark the start of our collaboration, here our in-house experts take a closer look at the story of the brand and why their whiskies have become so popular.

Mackmyra – the official ‘Swedish Whisky’ pioneers

The story of Mackmyra famously began with a ski trip in 1998.
A group of eight friends – all whisky enthusiasts – holidayed together, and suddenly realised that there were no whisky distilleries in Sweden. And they couldn’t understand why. Their vision to become pioneers took shape and, one year later, Mackmyra Svensk Whisky was established.

Two delicious whisky recipes

In 2001, after a couple of years of testing and evaluating in their pilot distillery, the brand decided on two key recipes – Mackmyra Elegant and Mackmyra Smoky.
Whilst ‘Elegant’ is deliciously fruity and delicate, ‘Smokey’ – just as the name suggests – is smoky and peppery, seasoned with juniper twigs and peat moss. And over the last 20 years, these basic flavours have been used to create a diverse range of Swedish whiskies, including a fair few award-winners.

Swedish ingredients

From the outset, Mackmyra focused on creating a whisky that was quintessentially Swedish.
Only local barley, spring water and Swedish oak are used in the distillation process. Swedish oak grows very slowly. In fact, the oak trees used were originally planted in the 1800s. And it is this age, combined with the use of small 30-litre casks, that gives the liquor its intensity and spicy yet sweet flavour – similar to caramelised sugar.
All barley is malted and smoked by hand using peat and juniper twigs from the local area. And the whiskies are aged just 45 minutes away from the distillery – 50 metres underground – at the ‘Bodås Mine’ warehouse.

Swedish whisky distillery

A climate-smart distillery

Mackmyra aims to produce the tastiest Swedish whiskies, whilst having as little impact as possible on the environment.
In 2011, the brand opened the world’s first climate-smart distillery; a 35 metre building that manufactures whisky using the force of gravity. Essentially, raw ingredients are fed into the top of the building, and fall naturally from one stage to the next – until the new-make spirit collects at the bottom.
It is an incredibly eco-friendly method of whisky making and the distillery is completely emission-free. Yet it doesn’t compromise on quality and, we guarantee, the resulting spirit is just as delicious (if not more so!) than any other single malt created using traditional methods.
