Short for whisky MacDonald, a whisky mac is a classic drink that’s stood the test of time.
This cocktail has a smoky and robust flavour with a sweet and spicy kick. This flavourful drink is beloved by many and is often enjoyed straight. However, it can also be served over ice to tone down its intense flavour profile.

How to Make a Whisky Mac: A Step-by-Step Guide
Once you’ve gathered your ingredients and tools, it’s time to get started on your whisky mac:
1. Measure Your Pour
Using the classic ratio, add one part whisky to one part green ginger wine to perfectly balance the flavours.
If you desire a stronger whisky flavour, combine two parts whisky and one part ginger wine. You can add extra ginger wine to make the drink sweeter and spicier.
2. Mix the Drink
These are three methods for this. Choose the perfect one for you:
- Straight pour method: Pour the measured whisky and green ginger wine into the serving glass for a quick and uncomplicated preparation.
- Stirring method: Add the whisky and ginger wine to an ice-filled mixing glass. Gently stir for 10-15 seconds to cool and blend the ingredients. Strain into a serving glass, with or without ice.
- Shaking method: If you prefer a diluted drink with some foam, combine the whisky and ginger wine in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake gently for about 10 seconds, then pour into a serving glass.
3. Serve Your Whisky Mac
Whisky Mac can be served straight (neat) for a stronger flavour or over ice for a pleasant, mellower cocktail.
Place your drink in a rock glass or an old-fashioned glass to add some sophistication to your experience.
4. Add Optional Garnishes
To add some extra flavour, place a slice of lemon into your cocktail for a hint of citrus. This complements the ginger flavour really well.
For an extra touch of ginger, add a piece of crystallised ginger to your drink. Additionally, a thin slice of fresh ginger can enhance the spicy aroma of the drink.
